Thinking Tools Design as Process. On the Creation of Writing Tools

24 September 2016 – 29 January 2017

What are the requisites for convincing design? And why is simplicity often so difficult to achieve in design?

From 1963 to 1966, the designer Gerd A. Müller developed a completely new writing utensil for the Lamy company in Heidelberg. The LAMY 2000 fountain pen has been manufactured uninterruptedly since that time, and is on display in many major design museums as an icon of functional elegance in design.

Taking the fifty-year production history of the LAMY 2000 as an occasion – and the pen itself as an example –, the Museum Angewandte Kunst looked at what goes into making our world of things. With prominent support from Christoph Niemann, whose illustrations are well known from such magazines as the New Yorker and Zeit Magazin, the exhibition retraced the long path from design to product.
