  • Maryam Baouardy (1846-1878), Sister Mary of Jesus Crucified, was a Palestinian nun of the Discalced Carmelite Order who was canonized by Pope Francis in 2015. Her visions and great piety led her to follow the path of a so-called consecrated virgin of Christ and to devote her life to serving her fellow human beings. Maryam miraculously survived an attack by a young man who slit her throat. After spending time in Marseille, Pau (France), and Mangalore (India), she founded a Carmelite convent in Bethlehem, where she worked until her death and where she is buried and venerated to this day.

    The icon evening is dedicated to this important Palestinian saint. Using the icon, which was made in December 2023 at the Icon Center Bethlehem for the Frankfurt Icon Museum, we look at Maryam’s life story and its impact to this day.     Mari Froes is a Brazilian singer-songwriter. The artist brings compositions that carry a unique identity as she moves through Brazilian rhythms with sensitivity and insight. In 2019, Froes released the first two tracks of her career, the singles “Moça” and “Rosa e Laranja”. In 2020, he released his first EP “Nebulosa”, featuring five tracks that complement each other, totalling more than 13 million streams. Before that, he collaborated with Rodrigo Alarcon on the song “15b”. He made his stage debut with shows at the Bananada Festival (GO) and two sold-out sessions at the Bruta Flor Theatre (SP). In March 2023, she made her first tour of Europe together with Agnes Nunes, with sold-out shows. About her first EP, Rolling Stone Brasil comments: “Froes’ voice is mature, with a very simple gravity and a hoarseness that adorably scratches here and there. It’s important to emphasise the sensitive musicality of this artist with each new single. There’s a vast universe for Mari Froes to traverse, and she has plenty of gumption for it”. A rising star in the digital world, the singer has accumulated more than 100,000,000 views on YouTube and more than 800,000 fans subscribed to her channel, winning over audiences across the country and abroad. With a large audience in countries such as Colombia, Mexico and Portugal, it’s clear that Mari Froes’ art transcends borders.

    BILLY COBHAM turns 80 in May 2024 and doesn’t even think about retiring. In fact, he will celebrate the original Billy Cobham Band revisited: Billy Cobham’s Time Machine
    “Time Machine is an updated version of my production that featured Michael Brecker, RandyBrecker, Glenn Ferris, Alex Blake, John Abercrombie, Milcho Leviev and Lee Pastora. 50 years have “blown by” since then. I have rarely performed some of the music from that period. “Solarization”, “Total Eclipse”, “Bandits”, “Crescent Sun”, “Moon Germs” and “Sea of Tranquility” have barely seen the light of day in any of my productions so, I am now focused upon resurrecting them around music that the Total Eclipse portfolio has inspired me to create.” – Billy Cobham
    Born in Panama on May 16, 1944, and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Cobham got his first paid gig at the age of eight as a member of St. Catherine’s Queensmen, a drum and bugle corps in St. Albans, Queens. He attended New York’s renowned Fiorella H. LaGuardia High
    School of Music & Art and the Performing Arts, where he studied music theory and drum technique. While in the military from 1965 to 1968, Cobham played with the U.S. Army Band as percussionist. After his service, he played in Horace Silver’s Band, performed with Stanley Turrentine and Shirley Scott, and recorded with George Benson.
    In 1969, Billy Cobham co – founded the jazz – rock combo, Dreams, which included Randy Brecker, Michael Brecker, John Abercrombie, Don Grolnick, Barry Rodgers, and Will Lee. The following year, he joined Miles Davis’ new fusion ensemble, and contributed to Live – Evil,
    A Tribute to Jack Johnson and the Bitches Brew sessions, where he collaborated with guitarist John McLaughlin.
    In 1971, Cobham became a founding member of the jazz – fusion Mahavishnu Orchestra, along with McLaughlin, Jan Hammer, Jerry Goodman, and Rick Laird. This original group released three critically acclaimed albums: The Inner Mounting (1971), Birds of Fire (1973)
    and Between Nothingness and Eternity (live album released in 1973). In 1973, Cobham released his debut solo album, Spectrum, a breakthrough in jazz -fusion that is universally recognized as one of the genre’s most significant and influential creations. Spectrum wasrecorded at Iimi Hendrix’s Electric Lady Studios in New York City. Cobham’s lineup for the album featured Tommy Bolin on guitar, Jan Hammer on electric piano, moog synthesizer & piano and Lee Sklar on bass.
    Also in 1973, Cobham toured with John McLaughlin and Carlos Santana, performing materialfrom the album, Love Devotion Surrender.
    In 1974, the original lineup of the Mahavishnu Orchestra disbanded. Cobham continued to create innovative fusion material with the release of Crosswind (1974), Shabaz, (1974) Total Eclipse (1974), A Funky Thide of Sings (1975) and Life and Times (1976).
    During the 70’s and 80’s, Cobham recorded for Atlantic, CBS, Elektra, and GRP. He collaborated with George Duke, John Scofield, Tony Williams, Jack Bruce, and The Grateful Dead spinoff band Bobby & the Midnites.
    In 1992, Cobham was appointed to work with UNICEF to work with autistic outpatients and street children in Santos, Brazil in a musical project that lasted for several years.
    In 2001, Cobham released the two – CD retrospective, Rudiments: The Billy Cobham Anthology. In 2002, he began releasing a series of CD’s featuring special artists, entitled, Drum n Voice.
    By 2005, Cobham had recorded and released over 30 recordings under his name. He developed and enjoyed a special musical collaboration with the Cuban group, Asere.
    In 2007, he released Fruit from the Loom, which is a wide – ranging representation of Cobham’s roots and journeys. In 2010, Cobham released Palindrome, the second installment from the Fruit from the Loom series.
    In 2011, Cobham began teaching drums online at The Jazz & Fusion Drum School with Billy Cobham.
    In 2013, Cobham celebrated the 40th anniversary of the release of Spectrum by touring the U.S., Canada and Europe with the Spectrum 40 Band. Also that year, Purple Pyramid Records released the Billy Cobham Compass Point two – CD set, recorded live at Compass Point Hotel in the Bahamas in 1997, which was never released before.
    Early 2014 marks the release of the much – anticipated “Tales from the Skeleton Coast”, which is the third installment of four recordings produced as a commemoration and celebration of Cobham’s mother and father, both of whom were musicians. In his words, “Tales from the Skeleton Coast reflects life experiences that I shared with my parents that I hold dear in my heart and mind, including impressions instilled in me while touring the region of what was previously called southwestern Africa but is now known as Namibia. The images of the Skeleton Coast in particular, still burn within me and through the music, I’ve created a sonic reflection of those cherished experiences.

    In the 1920s, the topic of kitchen redesign was a perennial favorite. In Frankfurt in 1926, the building authority “invented” the famous Frankfurter Küche based on the design work of Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky. Before it found its way – often via the bulky waste collection – into museums and collections in Western industrialized nations, it was installed around 10,000 times in the apartments of the housing estates of the New Frankfurt. The aim was to make reproductive and family work more time- and space-efficient. The fact that care work is still predominantly feminized and performed by the female members of society, without remuneration, is as well known as it is criticized.

    In this dialogue lecture, Jorun Jensen from the Deutsches Architekturmuseum and Grit Weber from the Museum Angewandte Kunst explore various other kitchen concepts from the 1920s, introduce other protagonists who promoted the “single-kitchen house,” for example, and supplement them with current perspectives, scientific discourses, and artistic positions. Refreshments will be served, followed by a screening of the film 100 Jahren Neues Bauen. Die Super-Küche (2025), produced for Arte and HR by Laura J Gerlach and Kerstin Kemena.

  • On Sunday, November 16, at 3 pm, the Icon Museum invites you to a public guided tour of the exhibition. Together with art educator Hana Spijkers, you will embark on a journey through the fascinating world of icons — from the 15th to the 20th century, spanning Ethiopia, Greece, the Balkan countries, and Russia. The focus of the tour will be on the spiritual significance of these sacred artworks for Orthodox Christians. We look forward to your visit!

  • At the Frankfurt Students’ Jam Sessions the city’s youngest jazz scene meets once a month at the Jazzklub in the Museum Angewandte Kunst. Pupils aged 12-18 can jam together, and all friends, parents and jazz enthusiasts who are looking forward to a lively jazz feeling with young people can listen.

    Dennis Sekretarev is a trumpeter and composer. From 2004–2009 he was a member of the Hessen Youth Jazz Orchestra. In 2010 he received the working grant Jazz from the city of Frankfurt for his compositions. In 2016 he received the compositions prize at the Tremplin Jazz competition in Avignon, France. Sekretarev studied at the Amsterdam Conservatory and at the Temple University in Philadelphia with Terell Stafford and Dick Oatts.
    Since 2013 he has been active on the Frankfurt and Amsterdam Jazz scenes. Sekretarev is a versatile trumpeter and composer and worked with artists such as Tony Lakatos, Wayne Escoffery, John Dikeman, the Contrast Trio, Eran Har Even and many others.
    He toured in Japan, Romania, Lithuania, France and other countries and played at the North Sea Jazz Festival, Saalfelden Jazz Festival, Vilnius Jazz Festival and others. In 2024 he released two albums with his Frankfurt based Band DNS JAZZ that combines Jazz with HipHop, Punk, House and Electro and with his Amsterdam based band Mobius that features original compositions mixed with free improvisation. This year he released an album with top Frankfurt musicians Darius Blair and Paul Janoschka.
    In the opener set he will present music from his latest releases and some new compositions. The music is influenced by Wayne Shorter, John Coltrane and Dave Holland.

    Emerging from the dynamic streets of Conant Gardens in Detroit, Slum Village is not just a music group, but a close-knit brotherhood tied together by friendship and their shared musical passions. Established in the early 1990s by T3, Baatin, and the iconic J Dilla (also known as Jay Dee), the group quickly became a cornerstone in Detroit’s hip-hop scene.
    J Dilla’s, enduring influence continued to shape the group, with his protégé and Grammy-nominated producer Young RJ stepping in as a rapper in 2009. With T3 and Young RJ’s stewardship, Slum Village has continued to innovate, producing revered albums such as “Trinity” with the standout track“Tainted,” and “Detroit Deli,” featuring the popular single “Selfish” with Kanye West and John Legend.
    T3 and Young RJ have been instrumental in preserving and expanding the group’s legacy, leading to later albums like “Villa Manifesto” and “YES,” which includes posthumous productions by Dilla. Today, Slum Village remains a celebrated name in the world of Detroit hip-hop. With over a decade of collaboration, T3 and Young RJ stay true to the group’s founding ethos while introducing new vitality and a contagious zest.
    Their recent works, including singles “Request,” “Factor,” “So “Superb” and the acclaimed album “F.U.N.” featuring artists like Cordae , Larry June, Elijah Fox, and Eric Roberson, highlight their continued commitment to breaking new ground and thrilling audiences globally. Explore their musical journey and experience the sounds that have established them as hip-hop royalty.

    Eli Keszler is a grammy nominated artist, composer, and percussionist based in New York. He has garnered critical acclaim for his solo records released through labels such as LuckyMe, Shelter Press, Empty Editions, ESP-DISK’, PAN, and REL Records.
    In the realm of film, Keszler has provided over ten original scores. Notable examples include Olmo Schnabel’s ‘Pet Shop Days,’ starring Willem Dafoe and Emmanuel Seigner, which premiered at La Biennale Di Venezia (2023). He also composed for Lofty Nathan’s ‘Harka’ (2022), winner of the Best Actor award at Cannes, and Dasha Nekrasova’s ‘The Scary of Sixty First’ (2021), which received the GWFF Best First Feature Award at the Berlin Film Festival. Additionally, Keszler made contributions to Daniel Lopatin’s score for ‘Uncut Gems’ (2019).
    As a composer, Keszler has received commissions from esteemed institutions and ensembles, including the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra, ICE Ensemble, Brooklyn String Orchestra, and So Percussion. He has collaborated with notable artists such as Oneohtrix Point Never, Skrillex, Laurel Halo, Jordan Wolfson, Kevin Beasley, Rashad Becker, Laure Prouvost, and David Grubbs.
    Keszler’s artistic reach extends internationally, with his music, installations, and visual works showcased in venues like the Whitney Museum, Cologne Philharmonie, Lincoln Center, MIT List Center, Victoria & Albert Museum, Museum of Modern Art, Sculpture Center, The Kitchen, Hessel Museum, Harvard’s Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts, Barbican-St. Luke’s, Walker Art Center, LAX Art, and MoMA PS1.

    In the fall of 2025, the Bundesjazzorchester (National Youth Jazz Orchestra) will honor its founding father and longtime artistic director, Peter Herbolzheimer. He would have turned 90 this year and is still regarded as one of Europe’s most influential bandleaders, composers, and arrangers. He shaped the big band sound for decades and laid the foundation for youth development in German jazz.
    The musical direction will be taken over by Jörn Marcussen-Wulff. Together with instructors, all of whom have played under or with Peter Herbolzheimer, the Bundesjazzorchester will create a program that brings the unmistakable sound of this legendary big band heavyweight back to life. Alongside his own compositions, selected arrangements from longtime collaborators of Herbolzheimer will be featured, arrangements that have shaped the sound of the Bundesjazzorchester for decades. With this program, the Bujazzo is making a musical statement of appreciation for Peter Herbolzheimer. The young talents of the current lineup will have the unique opportunity to discover his music in the original arrangements, and the audience can look forward to a very special experience.

  • Galaxy Groove is a newly formed band of five students from Dr. Hoch’s Conservatory. With their instruments, they open up a galaxy of jazz fusion for the audience at the Museum Angewandte Kunst.   • The radio series Neues Frankfurt is a series of programs produced in a historical radio format, which are broadcast in loose succession by radio x, Frankfurt’s city radio station. Texts and music from personalities of the 1920s, the pioneering era of the medium, are used for this purpose. On November 26, 2025, the radio program Neues Frankfurt will broadcast for the first time from the Museum Angewandte Kunst and directly from the exhibition Yes, we care. The New Frankfurt and the Pursuit of the Common Good. The figure appearing in the exhibition rooms is a member of the Frankfurt Housewives’ Association, who was a frequent guest on the Frankfurt radio station in the 1920s, where she spoke on topics related to housekeeping and care work, as well as vocational training and architecture.

    The series began with a broadcast from the German Architecture Museum entitled Der neue Mensch und die neue Musik (The New Man and the New Music) (2019). This was followed by a program from the Kuhhirtenturm (2019) as part of the Hindemith Days, the concert and lecture evening Das neue Hören und das neue Sehen (The New Hearing and the New Seeing) from the Volksbühne im Großen Hirschgraben in 2020, and the episode Neue Musik auf neuen Instrumenten (New Music on New Instruments) from MOMEM in 2023. Exactly one hundred years after the broadcast of Zauberei auf dem Sender (Magic on the Air), the first radio play in German (broadcast by SüWRAG in Frankfurt on October 24, 1924), a reconstruction of the work was performed and broadcast live as part of the series.

    After studying jazz at the prestigious Trinity Laban Conservatoire, British-Bengali singer Tara Lily decided to explore her own musical heritage. “A lot of jazz music is very similar to Indian classical music. So I was kind of doing that transfer of the scales and the chords and looking at those relationships and bringing them together,” she told gal-dem of her explorations. The resulting soulful pop is as much a testament to cross-cultural fusion as her eclectic on-stage style.

    Berlin-based, Caribbean-American singer, songwriter & producer, Sera Kalo is a genre-fluid artist intersecting a diverse collage of textures to create her own musical language. Her influences can be heard through hints of neo-soul, hip hop, pop, jazz, electronic, experimental and Latin/Caribbean musical styles.Sera’s work has gained her the 2025 German Jazz prize in the vocal category, the 2024 Sony Music Female* Producer Prize and various nominations including the 2023 German Record Critics’ Award for her debut album,eXante. Together with her band, Sera Kalo hopes to inspire and empower others to embrace their authentic selves.

    The saxophonist Christof Lauer has earned a top spot in the jazz world with his powerful virtuosity. In early 2019, he launched an extremely successful new format with his Jazz Meditation: On the first Wednesday of each month, he plays 30 minutes of freely improvised music at the Alte Nikolaikirche in Frankfurt’s Römer. He inspires listeners and spontaneous visitors, allowing them to connect, immerse themselves in sound worlds, and directs their mental energies towards creative, deep reflection.
    Without a doubt, Christof Lauer is one of Frankfurt’s standout musicians, alongside the Mangelsdorff brothers or Heinz Sauer, serving as a trademark of the jazz city of Frankfurt. Raised in a pastoral family in northern Hesse, he studied in Frankfurt and Graz. After returning to Frankfurt in the late 1970s, he became a soloist in the jazz ensemble of Hessischer Rundfunk, took Charlie Mariano’s place in the United Jazz and Rock Ensemble in 1994, and joined the Albert Mangelsdorff Quintet in 1996. He remained a member of the NDR Bigband until the end of 2018. He is a busy globetrotter: With his numerous band projects – for example with Michel Godard or Patrice Héral – he performs worldwide. He has been awarded the SWR Jazz Prize (1986) and the Hessian Jazz Prize (2005). In 2015, he received the Echo Jazz for “Petite Fleur” as Big Band Album of the Year.

    Riverside Session, together with Jazz Montez, presents: Jazz meets Hip Hop.
    Two evenings, two different programs – connected by a shared origin.
    Hip Hop was born at the block parties of the late ’70s with turntables, breakbeats, and an insatiable hunger for sound.
    Funk and soul provided the groove: driving rhythms, distinctive drum breaks, raw energy, and big emotions.
    Over time, hip hop opened up to new sonic worlds, and jazz entered the picture. Its harmonies, improvisation, and flow made it the perfect counterpart. Today, sampling has long evolved into true collaboration.
    Artists like Kendrick Lamar work with jazz greats such as Kamasi Washington and Terrace Martin. But young jazz acts like Moses Yoofee or Yussef Dayes also strike a chord with hip hop fans. The boundaries are blurring, and the exchange is alive.
    For the past three years, Riverside Session has been building bridges between musical styles and people.
    On these two nights, you’ll feel exactly that: live music, DJing, and rap – interpreted by the impulsive, soulful Riverside Collective.

Fred Wesley, one of the driving forces behind the unmistakable sound of the 1970s, played a key role in countless hits such as “Pass the Peas,” “Gimme Some More,” and “Doing It to Death.” With The New JB’s, he delivers a powerful blend of sweat-inducing grooves, irresistible basslines, and virtuosic horn arrangements that thrill die-hard funk fans and newcomers alike. The music of Fred Wesley & The New JB’s has not only inspired generations of musicians, but has also left a lasting mark on both hip-hop and pop music.
