How do citizens and politicians interact in a democracy, and what stands in the way of that interaction? The project The In-Between explored this question through a design process spanning several months. Together with citizens, elected officials, and experts from academia and the communications field, the project analyzed problems, identified patterns, and developed concrete approaches.
On 22 August, from 2 to 5 pm, Gestaltungszentrale Politik e.V. and Raamwerk e.V. will present the results of this process at the WDC Hub and invite attendees to discuss them.

The project invites people from Frankfurt and the surrounding region to discover their favorite democratic places. Five workshops are planned with ten local artists specializing in the theme, involving around 250 participants in total.
Under expert guidance, participants can get creative without pressure for perfection, capturing their places through drawing or painting – either during the workshop or with the DIY Workshop to go. On paper, anything is possible: accessible, open, and inspiring. The program encourages people of different ages and backgrounds to consciously engage with their surroundings, discover favorite places, and make them visible to others. It also reveals gaps – missing or vanished places – that can serve as starting points for collective, local, or political engagement.
The workshops are designed as empowering experiences: creating together, experiencing self-efficacy, sharing responsibility, and building networks. Additionally, a Workshop to go will be developed – a fold-out guide featuring examples of illustrated democratic places along with instructions for sketching or describing one’s own favorite place. This offer is freely accessible and invites everyone to actively participate.
Amelie Persson is an artist and author. Her drawings often depict urban environments. The illustrated anthology she edited, Lieblingsorte in Frankfurt (Societäts-Verlag), brings together 20 Frankfurt-based illustrators and their views of Frankfurt. Together, they run the workshops.

Right-wing thinking has once again become hegemonic in society. Material culture plays a decisive role in this. It has gained enormous significance for political socialization. Academic discourses that attribute to objects a constitutive effect on the political subject and its cultural practices are meeting with a growing desire to bring about a transformation of society through design, architecture, theater, or art.
In his book, Frieder Bohaumilitzky examines the connection between right-wing thinking and objects. He documents how the ambivalent idea of political subjectivation through objects has come to be realized as a comprehensive dispositif—ranging from the abstract arguments of contemporary philosophers to concrete right-wing cultural practices of the present. In doing so, he demonstrates that essentialist patterns of thought and authoritarian yearnings were present in these discourses from an early stage, how this way of thinking was made productive, and how it was ultimately applied to civil society through right-wing metapolitics. He no longer locates right-wing thinking solely on the margins of society but shows how it emerged at its supposed center.
