The Dalai Lama visited the Museum Angewandte Kunst ... and entered into dialogue with school pupils

When the XIVth Dalai Lama came to Hesse for several days in July 2015, he paid a visit to the Museum Angewandte Kunst, where he entered into dialogue with school pupils in an exclusive discussion round.
Under the motto “with brotherly love and compassion to success”, the illustrious guest – a Nobel Peace Prize recipient held in high regard all over the world – responded to the questions of the socially dedicated and highly motivated young participants.

Together they discussed fundamental issues of social responsibility, current ethical topics and the basic principles of Buddhism. The young people had the opportunity to prepare thematically for this special occasion in workshops and lectures organized by the Museum Angewandte Kunst and the Tibethaus Deutschland e.V., a cultural institute of Frankfurt.

The event at the museum was part of the visit to Hesse undertaken by the spiritual leader of the Tibetans on the occasion of his eightieth birthday celebrations in July 2015. He had come on invitation from the “Friends for a Friend” association, whose aim is to bring people together with the Dalai Lama and thus to spark enthusiasm for his path.

After the major exhibition Buddha: 108 Encounters presented in cooperation with the Tibethaus, as well as the Tibet Week taking place at the Museum Angewandte Kunst in 2014, the museum –which has an exceptional collection of East Asian art in its holdings – once again served as a venue for intercultural encounter.

At a museum that takes the world of things as a point of departure for inquiry into how we design our own lives, the question ‘How do we want to live?’ is an ever-recurring theme. The Dalai Lama’s visit was therefore a welcome occasion to examine this question from a spiritual perspective.
