Design for Democracy is understood as a responsible design approach aimed at facilitating, expanding, preserving, and enriching life. It involves creating effective, participatory solutions to the pressing problems of our time – problems that, defined as “good problems”, demand equally good design solutions. Design is understood as a process of transformation that people implement in their environment, as a tool that can promote peaceful, diverse, and democratic coexistence.
Well-designed, welcoming public spaces, sports facilities and parks, helpful tools – such as those that facilitate participation in public life, inclusive museums and third places, adaptable residential architecture, clear wayfinding systems and guidance on dealing with administrative formalities, as well as smart mobility concepts, are all part of the sustainable infrastructure that makes social cohesion in everyday life and a positive outlook on the future possible in the first place.
The existence and condition of such infrastructure play a decisive role in determining educational opportunities, social advancement, integration, the sense of whether the community is there for everyone – or not – and, not least, confidence in the democratic capacity to act. A product design process that is carefully considered and focused on resource conservation, durability, good working conditions and aesthetic quality plays a key role in determining the future viability of our world, the availability and opportunity to get involved in the nature of our coexistence in the here and now.
The curators have selected 25 projects from Germany and abroad for this exhibition, organised for the first time at the Museum Angewandte Kunst as part of World Design Capital Frankfurt RheinMain 2026. The selection features contemporary design examples from the Frankfurt RheinMain region, linked to European projects and perspectives. A varied course through the exhibition explores the relationship between design and democracy, offers new perspectives on co-creation and public interest, and challenges the impact of good design.
