Design models are an integral part of the design process, as prototypes and providers of ideas for those products that are later launched on the market as serial and mass goods. However, working with models is an interdisciplinary undertaking: The book reflects on the design model as the basis for future concepts, as a collector’s item in a museum and in its actual function as a planning and working tool for designers and model builders.

From November 2023 to April 2024, the Museum Angewandte Kunst hosted two exhibitions about Dieter and Ingeborg Rams, and from February to April 2024 an exhibition of student concept and design drafts from TU Delft and Politecnico Milano for Braun / De’Longhi. To mark the opening of this “exhibition within the exhibition”, a panel discussion was dedicated to the training of designers in industrial and product design at technical universities. This discussion will now be continued with a discussion on design studies at German universities.
In Germany, the majority of relevant studies at university level take place at art colleges. This second discussion event will focus on the possibly different or similar characteristics and curricula of these universities. It will also address the recurring question of the relationship between art and design in studies and design practice.

4–5.30 pm: Bringing knowledge to the street – on the practice of design research
For a long time now, we have had fewer problems with understanding the causes and possible solutions to current crises than problems of implementation. Classical academic research has long been concerned with how its validated results can be put into practice instead of ending up in the drawers of their respective clients. The aim of the panel is to discuss how design and design research, with their specific methods and ways of working, can help to ensure that practical relevance is not lost from sight and/or established.
Together with experts from the field, perspectives for the discipline of design will be presented.

Old Slavic calligraphy has its roots in Byzantine times and is still used today to decorate icons and church books. This ancient craft technique is an impressive example of how traditional knowledge and craftsmanship have been preserved and passed on over the centuries. Under the guidance of Byzantine art historian and icon painter Tatyana Haustova, clay paper will be artistically designed using a calligraphy pen. Participants will refine letters, initials, figurative representations or ornaments with golden paint.
