The Digital Collection is the online catalog of the collection of the Museum Angewandte Kunst in Frankfurt am Main. The museum’s collection comprises a rich stock of applied art from Japan, Korea, China, Turkey, Iran, European countries and the USA, among others, spanning around 5,000 years. The collection also includes design, book art and graphic art and is characterized by the diversity and outstanding quality of the individual pieces. The Digital Collection makes this important cultural asset widely and permanently accessible to the broad public.
The Digital Collection contains information and images of selected items of the Museum Angewandte Kunst. Around 200 objects from all eras, locations, contexts and areas of the collection can currently be researched, providing a representative overview of the museum’s collection. The Museum Angewandte Kunst has set itself the task of digitizing its entire collection and publishing it online in the coming years. In this context, the Digital Collection will be continuously expanded and updated.
Before being included in the Digital Collection each work is digitally photographed and linked to descriptive metadata that enables a variety of search options and categorizations. The thematic and motivic indexing also brings forward new and surprising references and object constellations. In this sense, the digital presentation of the collection offers an ideal supplement to the Museum Angewandte Kunst’s mission as a space of possibility and a lively place of discovery. Explanatory texts on the objects and other audiovisual media will soon be available to deepen knowledge surrounding the objects.
