CreateCreate Education Programme

Menschen an einem Tisch mit Bastelmaterialien im Museumsfoyer.

We call our museum education programme Create, because every participant can make something themselves.

Every visitor brings an entire world of their own into the museum, and with it one of innumerable ways of looking at what is on display here. Every person sees and feels differently and something different. Our education programmes accordingly offer our visitors opportunities to enter into dialogue with us about what they have seen and experienced here: dialogue about knowledge and non-knowledge, questions and possible answers, seeing and non-seeing. One question is always at the fore: what do the objects have to do with me? When we explore the museum with this question in mind, we together discover the aspects that connect us with the exhibition themes and those themes with our everyday worlds.

Comprehensive information about our educational events and activities in English and other foreign languages is available.

Please feel free to contact us.

Program from November

01. November - 31. Dezember 2026

  • Maryam Baouardy (1846-1878), Sister Mary of Jesus Crucified, was a Palestinian nun of the Discalced Carmelite Order who was canonized by Pope Francis in 2015. Her visions and great piety led her to follow the path of a so-called consecrated virgin of Christ and to devote her life to serving her fellow human beings. Maryam miraculously survived an attack by a young man who slit her throat. After spending time in Marseille, Pau (France), and Mangalore (India), she founded a Carmelite convent in Bethlehem, where she worked until her death and where she is buried and venerated to this day.

The icon evening is dedicated to this important Palestinian saint. Using the icon, which was made in December 2023 at the Icon Center Bethlehem for the Frankfurt Icon Museum, we look at Maryam’s life story and its impact to this day. We would like to express our sincere thanks to the Friends of the Icon Museum in Frankfurt for their generous donation towards the purchase of the icon!

Mari Froes is a Brazilian singer-songwriter. The artist brings compositions that carry a unique identity as she moves through Brazilian rhythms with sensitivity and insight. In 2019, Froes released the first two tracks of her career, the singles “Moça” and “Rosa e Laranja”. In 2020, he released his first EP “Nebulosa”, featuring five tracks that complement each other, totalling more than 13 million streams. Before that, he collaborated with Rodrigo Alarcon on the song “15b”. He made his stage debut with shows at the Bananada Festival (GO) and two sold-out sessions at the Bruta Flor Theatre (SP). In March 2023, she made her first tour of Europe together with Agnes Nunes, with sold-out shows. About her first EP, Rolling Stone Brasil comments: “Froes’ voice is mature, with a very simple gravity and a hoarseness that adorably scratches here and there. It’s important to emphasise the sensitive musicality of this artist with each new single. There’s a vast universe for Mari Froes to traverse, and she has plenty of gumption for it”. A rising star in the digital world, the singer has accumulated more than 100,000,000 views on YouTube and more than 800,000 fans subscribed to her channel, winning over audiences across the country and abroad. With a large audience in countries such as Colombia, Mexico and Portugal, it’s clear that Mari Froes’ art transcends borders.

BILLY COBHAM turns 80 in May 2024 and doesn’t even think about retiring. In fact, he will celebrate the original Billy Cobham Band revisited: Billy Cobham’s Time Machine
“Time Machine is an updated version of my production that featured Michael Brecker, RandyBrecker, Glenn Ferris, Alex Blake, John Abercrombie, Milcho Leviev and Lee Pastora. 50 years have “blown by” since then. I have rarely performed some of the music from that period. “Solarization”, “Total Eclipse”, “Bandits”, “Crescent Sun”, “Moon Germs” and “Sea of Tranquility” have barely seen the light of day in any of my productions so, I am now focused upon resurrecting them around music that the Total Eclipse portfolio has inspired me to create.” – Billy Cobham

  • With Jorun Jensen and Grit Weber.

In the 1920s, the topic of kitchen redesign was a perennial favorite. In Frankfurt in 1926, the building authority “invented” the famous Frankfurter Küche based on the design work of Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky. Before it found its way – often via the bulky waste collection – into museums and collections in Western industrialized nations, it was installed around 10,000 times in the apartments of the housing estates of the New Frankfurt. The aim was to make reproductive and family work more time- and space-efficient. The fact that care work is still predominantly feminized and performed by the female members of society, without remuneration, is as well known as it is criticized.

In this dialogue lecture, Jorun Jensen from the Deutsches Architekturmuseum and Grit Weber from the Museum Angewandte Kunst explore various other kitchen concepts from the 1920s, introduce other protagonists who promoted the “single-kitchen house,” for example, and supplement them with current perspectives, scientific discourses, and artistic positions. Refreshments will be served, followed by a screening of the film 100 Jahren Neues Bauen. Die Super-Küche (2025), produced for Arte and HR by Laura J Gerlach and Kerstin Kemena.

In the fall of 2025, the Bundesjazzorchester (National Youth Jazz Orchestra) will honor its founding father and longtime artistic director, Peter Herbolzheimer. He shaped the big band sound for decades and laid the foundation for youth development in German jazz.
The musical direction will be taken over by Jörn Marcussen-Wulff. Together with instructors, all of whom have played under or with Peter Herbolzheimer, the Bundesjazzorchester will create a program that brings the unmistakable sound of this legendary big band heavyweight back to life. Alongside his own compositions, selected arrangements from longtime collaborators of Herbolzheimer will be featured, arrangements that have shaped the sound of the Bundesjazzorchester for decades. With this program, the Bujazzo is making a musical statement of appreciation for Peter Herbolzheimer. The young talents of the current lineup will have the unique opportunity to discover his music in the original arrangements, and the audience can look forward to a very special experience.

  • The radio series Neues Frankfurt is a series of programs produced in a historical radio format, which are broadcast in loose succession by radio x, Frankfurt’s city radio station. Texts and music from personalities of the 1920s, the pioneering era of the medium, are used for this purpose. On November 26, 2025, the radio program Neues Frankfurt will broadcast for the first time from the Museum Angewandte Kunst and directly from the exhibition Yes, we care. The New Frankfurt and the Pursuit of the Common Good. The figure appearing in the exhibition rooms is a member of the Frankfurt Housewives’ Association, who was a frequent guest on the Frankfurt radio station in the 1920s, where she spoke on topics related to housekeeping and care work, as well as vocational training and architecture.

The series began with a broadcast from the German Architecture Museum entitled Der neue Mensch und die neue Musik (The New Man and the New Music) (2019). This was followed by a program from the Kuhhirtenturm (2019) as part of the Hindemith Days, the concert and lecture evening Das neue Hören und das neue Sehen (The New Hearing and the New Seeing) from the Volksbühne im Großen Hirschgraben in 2020, and the episode Neue Musik auf neuen Instrumenten (New Music on New Instruments) from MOMEM in 2023. Exactly one hundred years after the broadcast of Zauberei auf dem Sender (Magic on the Air), the first radio play in German (broadcast by SüWRAG in Frankfurt on October 24, 1924), a reconstruction of the work was performed and broadcast live as part of the series.

After studying jazz at the prestigious Trinity Laban Conservatoire, British-Bengali singer Tara Lily decided to explore her own musical heritage. “A lot of jazz music is very similar to Indian classical music. So I was kind of doing that transfer of the scales and the chords and looking at those relationships and bringing them together,” she told gal-dem of her explorations. The resulting soulful pop is as much a testament to cross-cultural fusion as her eclectic on-stage style.

The saxophonist Christof Lauer has earned a top spot in the jazz world with his powerful virtuosity. In early 2019, he launched an extremely successful new format with his Jazz Meditation: On the first Wednesday of each month, he plays 30 minutes of freely improvised music at the Alte Nikolaikirche in Frankfurt’s Römer. He inspires listeners and spontaneous visitors, allowing them to connect, immerse themselves in sound worlds, and directs their mental energies towards creative, deep reflection.
Without a doubt, Christof Lauer is one of Frankfurt’s standout musicians, alongside the Mangelsdorff brothers or Heinz Sauer, serving as a trademark of the jazz city of Frankfurt. Raised in a pastoral family in northern Hesse, he studied in Frankfurt and Graz. After returning to Frankfurt in the late 1970s, he became a soloist in the jazz ensemble of Hessischer Rundfunk, took Charlie Mariano’s place in the United Jazz and Rock Ensemble in 1994, and joined the Albert Mangelsdorff Quintet in 1996. He remained a member of the NDR Bigband until the end of 2018. He is a busy globetrotter: With his numerous band projects – for example with Michel Godard or Patrice Héral – he performs worldwide. He has been awarded the SWR Jazz Prize (1986) and the Hessian Jazz Prize (2005). In 2015, he received the Echo Jazz for “Petite Fleur” as Big Band Album of the Year.

Two nights. One vibe. No boundaries.
Riverside Session, together with Jazz Montez, presents: Jazz meets Hip Hop.
Two evenings, two different programs – connected by a shared origin.
Hip Hop was born at the block parties of the late ’70s with turntables, breakbeats, and an insatiable hunger for sound.
Funk and soul provided the groove: driving rhythms, distinctive drum breaks, raw energy, and big emotions.
Over time, hip hop opened up to new sonic worlds, and jazz entered the picture. Its harmonies, improvisation, and flow made it the perfect counterpart. Today, sampling has long evolved into true collaboration.
Artists like Kendrick Lamar work with jazz greats such as Kamasi Washington and Terrace Martin. But young jazz acts like Moses Yoofee or Yussef Dayes also strike a chord with hip hop fans. The boundaries are blurring, and the exchange is alive.
For the past three years, Riverside Session has been building bridges between musical styles and people.
On these two nights, you’ll feel exactly that: live music, DJing, and rap – interpreted by the impulsive, soulful Riverside Collective.
Two worlds, one feeling. Get ready.

Under the leadership of legendary trombonist Fred Wesley—who made music history as James Brown’s musical director and a member of George Clinton’s Parliament-Funkadelic—the band has become synonymous with authentic funk. Fred Wesley, one of the driving forces behind the unmistakable sound of the 1970s, played a key role in countless hits such as “Pass the Peas,” “Gimme Some More,” and “Doing It to Death.” With The New JB’s, he delivers a powerful blend of sweat-inducing grooves, irresistible basslines, and virtuosic horn arrangements that thrill die-hard funk fans and newcomers alike. The music of Fred Wesley & The New JB’s has not only inspired generations of musicians, but has also left a lasting mark on both hip-hop and pop music.

The German-Greek double bassist Athina Kontou, award-winning saxophonist Luise Volkmann, and Cretan laouto player and singer George Xylouris come together for the first time in Frankfurt.
George Xylouris recently captivated Frankfurt audiences with his solo program “Homa”, in which — rooted in the rich tradition of his legendary Cretan musical family — he powerfully built a bridge between the earth of his homeland and avant-garde expressiveness. In this new trio as well, the dialogue between heritage and departure, between tradition and improvised present, takes center stage: Kontou, herself known for blending Southeastern European folk sounds and contemporary jazz with her band Mother, seizes the opportunity to create a musical space together with Xylouris and Volkmann in which migration, experiences of foreignness, and cultural identity are brought vividly to sound.
The trio is completed by Luise Volkmann, a musician honored with jazz awards whose playing is marked by an uncompromising creative drive. She, too, regularly explores the intersection of traditional techniques and contemporary jazz idioms — whether in her duo with Brazilian guitarist Kikko Dinucci or, of course, in Mother alongside Athina Kontou. The music of this evening draws on the traditional roots of the Eastern Mediterranean and lifts them into the freedom of contemporary jazz — with the determination to create something unique that nevertheless belongs to everyone. A special concert experience that transcends genres and builds bridges — performed for the first time in this formation in Frankfurt.

In the middle of Barcelona’s bustling streets—amid chaos, traffic, and stress—Las Karamba was founded in 2018. Six life stories came together here, each shaped by migration, musical heritage, and sometimes subversive family backgrounds. Together, these women wanted to draw strength, overcome fears, and pursue their dreams. They also sought to express their devotion to music while highlighting the role of women.

The multicultural band is made up of members from Venezuela, Cuba, Catalonia, France, and Argentina. They bring a fresh and powerful twist to traditional styles such as Son, Cha-Cha-Cha, Salsa, and Timba by blending them with influences from rap and urban music, along with a touch of Samba and Rumba.

On stage, the group performs with seamless unity, delivering an electrifying show filled with danceable songs, impeccable arrangements, and captivating, catchy melodies. Lead singer Ahyvin Bruno knows how to thrill the audience with her remarkable voice, supported by flawless backing vocals.

Las Karamba brings joy and outstanding music to the stage—full of fun and energy, winning over audiences from the very first moment!

Oliver Johnson aka Dorian Concept latest album “What We Do For Others” is out now on Brainfeeder Records. It’s the third studio album by the Austrian producer and synthesizer savant, famed for his singular, beautifully detailed sonic tapestries and wild, utterly joyful live keyboard jam videos.
“What We Do For Others” is a relaxed, quietly confident and intimate record, founded on delightfully loose arrangements, feedbacked soundscapes and blessed with snatches of his own cryptic vocals that are presented more as additional instrumentation rather than lyrical phrases. All the elements and layers were recorded without interruptions and deliberately not edited. “I think that’s why this record has something of a ‘band sound’” says Oliver. “It’s me playing all kinds of different key-instruments, singing and using fx-units to create these freeform compositions.”
The title came to Oliver in a dream and stuck with him. “One thing I often find interesting about my creative process is that when I believe to be making something that others could like, it tends to not really connect with people,” he says. “Whereas when I get to that special place and just work from my gut – the music tends to often speak to the outside world naturally.” Johnson says that he tried questioning his internal voice of self-judgement and temper his constant urge for improvement during the making of the album.
In the early years Dorian Concept climbed an ascent perhaps exemplary of this generation’s brightest production talents: after experimenting with production software, piano and saxophone throughout his teenage years, he studied multi-media art at university before catching the internet’s attention with virtuosic video footage of himself shredding on a microKORG and dropping out to pursue music-making more seriously. In the span of a few years he had caught the attention of such sonic agenda-setters as Gilles Peterson, Benji B and Mary Anne Hobbs; released a flurry of EPs; performed with The Cinematic Orchestra at Royal Albert Hall; joined the ranks of other promising upstarts at Red Bull Music Academy; got spotted by Flying Lotus and invited to tour in his live band. After finding a home on Ninja Tune, he enjoyed underground success with the release of an album “Joined Ends”, dizzyingly intricate singles which made the rounds on experimental dancefloors worldwide, and subsequent live touring from Glastonbury to Sonar to MoMA PS1’s Warm Up.

Formed during their shared music studies, the trio has developed a distinctive, clearly structured sound. The balance between unpretentiousness and highly interactive, impulsive playing is at the forefront of this classic jazz ensemble, featuring Tobias Fröhlich (bass) and Jan-Einar Groh (drums). The compositions, mostly written by Johanna Summer, never lose their connection to the musical roots of the bandleader. Having grown up with classical music and always surrounded by established pop and rock music, she sees it as her duty to acknowledge the legitimacy of all these influences within modern jazz music.

This new duo brings together the talents of celebrated pianist and composer Gwilym Simcock and rising star saxophonist and composer Emma Rawicz. This musical collaboration has a special depth and freedom that has blossomed in just a short space of time, maturing rapidly into a unique and exciting musical force. Emma and Gwilym have composed for each other and collaborated on arrangements, drawing on the many common influences they share. Such has been the success of this musical venture; they have already been into the studio to record their first album as a duo – eagerly anticipated and scheduled for release on the prestigious ACT label on the 1st of November.
Emma and Gwilym will be performing music from their exciting upcoming duo release including original works and arrangements of a variety of other music from the Great American Songbook to Stevie Wonder! Their collaboration has been a cross-generation revelation, but possibly a predictable success – given they both had a similar significant classical and jazz training at the prestigious Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester and Royal Academy of Music in London. The duo’s connection as labelmates on the ACT label makes a collaboration even more fitting, and they are very excited to see where their adventure as an established ensemble will take them. Their love of engaging, energetic and joyful music is evident throughout this set, and the intimate chamber concert is a perfect setting for this very special project to be heard!

Founded in 2024, the Traumfabrik Jazz Orchestra brings together young, talented female musicians from the German jazz scene, who infuse the ensemble with their energetic enthusiasm and give it a distinctive sound. Among them are former members of the renowned Bundesjazzorchester, who have already worked with international jazz giants at a young age.
The musicians come from all over Germany and bring their individual artistic perspectives, creating a unique and multifaceted sound that captivates and moves the audience.
For the festive Christmas concert on December 14, 2025, at the Museum of Applied Arts, the Traumfabrik Jazz Orchestra will be expanded for the first time to include a vocal ensemble. Together, they will present a soulful program with Christmas carols arranged specifically for this occasion—both imaginative and emotional, at times gentle and at times powerful. The arrangements are by Finn Heine, who already impressed audiences with his compositions during the summer program. As a former fellow of the WDR Big Band Composer Fellowship program, where he studied with Vince Mendoza and Florian Ross, Heine knows how to give traditional Christmas sounds a new, jazz-inspired glow.
The music of the Traumfabrik Jazz Orchestra blends modern big band traditions with innovative and experimental elements—this time embedded in festive soundscapes that invite dreaming, enjoyment, and awe. A special concert experience for the Christmas season.

Caro Trischler is here – and with her comes a sonic cosmos that begins softly and goes straight under your skin.
At the LOKAL Listener hosted by Gregor Praml at the Museum Angewandte Kunst, the Mainz-based singer and guitarist presents her own songs in English and Portuguese – sometimes poetic, sometimes introspective, always honest and immediate. In her music, jazz, Brazilian bossa nova, and folk blend into a warm musical language full of lightness and intensity.
“I love the quiet, haunting tones the most,” she says herself, “the ones that resonate with both lightness and intensity in English and Portuguese.” These tones also define her current program: music as escapism – as a place of retreat and healing in a world that often feels overwhelming. Caro invites her audience “to lose themselves, blissfully dazed, in the music and to fade out the world around them.”
Her path led her early on from a small town in Baden to Berlin – at 17, she reached the semifinals of The Voice of Germany and performed on the big TV stage. But instead of glitter and glamour, she was drawn to substance: “I was always searching for music that truly moved me – music that came into being for its own sake.” This search took her to Mainz, where she studied jazz vocals and eventually discovered Brazilian music, to which she now devotes herself wholeheartedly. Today she sings classics by João Gilberto and Elis Regina with the same conviction as her own songs, inspired by Joni Mitchell or Paramore – an unusual but, in that very way, authentic mix.
Caro Trischler is accompanied by her longtime companion, pianist Ulf Kleiner. In the concert talk with Gregor Praml at the LOKAL Listener, Caro not only shares her music but also her story – from playing Debussy on the piano at home to indie rock in her teenage bedroom to discovering bossa nova. An evening poised between melancholy and hope, reflection and comfort – carried by a voice that lingers.
